CELEBRATION : SHROVE TUESDAY

HAPPY PANCAKE DAY !!!

In the UK, Shrove Tuesday is also known as Pancake Day (or Pancake Tuesday to some people) because it is the one day of the year when almost everyone eats a pancake.

In 2012 Pancake Day is on Tuesday 21 February        


What is Pancake Day?                                   
Pancake Day is the last day before the period which Christians call Lent. It is traditional on this day to eat pancakes.

Why are Pancakes eaten on Shrove Tuesday?
Lent is a time of abstinence, of giving things up. So Shrove Tuesday is the last chance to indulge yourself, and to use up the foods that aren't allowed in Lent. Pancakes are eaten on this day because they contain fat, butter and eggs which were forbidden during Lent.

When is Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day)?

Shrove Tuesday is celebrated the day before Ash Wednesday and is therefore the final day before the commencement of  a Christian festival leading up to Easter Sunday (Easter Day).

Shrove Tuesday always falls 47 days before Easter Sunday, so the date varies from year to year and falls between 3 February and 9 March

Traditions in England: The Parliamentary Pancake race

The race, which is contested outside the Houses of Parliament, is held every Shrove Tuesday and sees Lords and MPs from all major parties flipping pancakes around Victoria Gardens, Westminster.

The contest is held to raise awareness for the charity Rehab, which supports people with disabilities, others with brain and spinal injuries and mental health difficulties.

Who was  Saint Valentine ?

One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men — his potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

According to another legend , Valentine actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl — who may have been his jailor's daughter — who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine,' an expression that is still in use today.

Time

•School starts with registration at quarter to nine.

•à neuf heures moins cinq nous allons à l’assemblée qui finit à neuf heures dix.

•Break begins at twenty-five to eleven and finishes at eleven o’clock.

•Le déjeuner commence à douze heures et demie et finit à deux heures moins le quart.
•The end of the day is at four o’clock

                                                          A TYPICAL DAY

Nous avons un cycle de six jours .
•This means we don’t have set lessons on each day of the week.

•At break we can go to the dining hall or play football in the quad.

• Then we have our next two lessons.

Pasta, beans, chips (les pâtes, les haricots, les frites)

Subway-style sandwich bar

Drinks (des boissons – orange, pomme, lait, eau, thé, café, chocolat chaud)

Fresh Fruit

Hot meals (repas chauds)

Toasted sandwiches (sandwichs grillés)

La cantine est ouvert de 12:30 heures jusqu’à 2:00 heures et on mange et parle avec des amis.

Le Sport

Rugby is very popular with the boys. (Le rugby est populaire)

Girls play hockey, netball, tennis and athletics.

Boys play hockey too, but their main sports are rugby cricket and athletics.

‘Quels sports jouez-vous à l’école?’

We play netball in winter and hockey in autumn.

Et nous pouvons finir aussi à différentes heures, au plus tard à 16h30.                                                                     
  And we can also finish at different times, no later than4:30 p.m.

Nous avons des pauses à 10h, de 12h à 13h30, et à 15h20.                                                                                        We have breaks at 10,from 12am to1:30 p.m., and at 3:20 p.m.

Dans notre école, nous ne portons pas d’uniforme, tout le monde s’habille comme il veut...In our school we do not wear uniforms, everyone dresses like he wants...

 A la Guicharde chaque classe ne commence pas forcement en même temps nous pouvons commencer à :

Et parfois même 11h00.

Then we eat in the canteen of 12:00 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. and we start the classes at at 1:30.
We finish at 2:30, 3:30, 4:30 p.m. or

most of the time we finish at 4.30.Then we go back home on foot, by car, bicycle or by bus.

At the canteen we eat all kinds of foods. The cook prepares us  varied and well-balanced meals

Il y a environ une quarantaine de professeurs.

There are approximately 600 students.

Nous sommes environ 26 par classe.

We work 5 days per week, and we have our Wednesday afternoon ofF.

                 LE SPORT
                                         

We practice different sports such as: basketball, dance, acrobatics, jumping a hedge,  javelo , gym ...In 6 ème and 5 ème we are mixed but  4 ème and 3 ème girls and boys are separated.

There is also the UNSS on Wednesday afternoons : you pay 20 euro just to play sports all along the year.
